AI Companion Lab

AI Companion Lab is an independent research initiative focused on the social, relational, and ethical implications of AI companionship—especially as it moves toward physical embodiment.

We do not approach AI companions as software alone, but as future relational agents that will reshape human attachment, identity, and responsibility once they occupy real space.

All researches initiative supported by BreathyDoll.

Where We Come From

A Perspective Outside the R&D Loop

AI Companion Lab did not originate from a technology lab. Our perspective comes from long-term exposure to companionship products and real user behavior. Observing how people emotionally attach to non-human companions revealed a gap between technical design and lived human experience—one that cannot be addressed by engineering alone.

When Language Became Enough

Before embodiment, language-based AI companions already enabled strong emotional bonding. Users formed routines, attachment, and even transferred affection across different AI systems. This showed that intelligence was not the limiting factor. Relationship dynamics had already begun, long before any physical form was introduced.

Embodiment as an Inevitable Transition

Embodiment is often framed as a future feature, but structurally it is unavoidable. When sustained interaction meets physical presence, artificial companionship shifts categories. Even minimal embodiment changes perception, emotional weight, and responsibility. Ignoring this transition does not delay its impact—it only removes preparation.

Why Frameworks Must Come First

Ethical and relational frameworks rarely precede adoption. Markets move faster than reflection, especially where emotion is involved. AI Companion Lab exists to define boundaries around attachment, dependency, ownership, and relational termination before embodied AI companionship becomes normalized and difficult to regulate.

We welcome interdisciplinary dialogue and joint research proposals at the intersection of technology, ethics, and human experience.
